Good to know

  • 1.4 m deep
  • Swim caps not needed
  • Quiet lane on the left

The Thermal Hall is where everyone starts. The pool is thirty metres long and 1.4 metres deep, filled from the spring at 34 °C: warm enough to stay in for an hour, cool enough to swim a few slow lengths.

Above it is the glass dome of 1913, restored pane by pane in 2019. On a bright day the light comes down in long stripes; on a grey one the hall glows green from the tiles.

The lion-head fountains along the wall pour fresh spring water into the pool all day. Stand under one for a minute: it is the warmest place in the hall.
